Google Search Console on Wix: How to Set It Up and What to Check (2026)

Quick answer: To set up Google Search Console on a Wix site, you need a Premium plan with a connected domain. Create a URL prefix property for your full address, copy the HTML tag Google gives you, paste it into Site Verification in your Wix dashboard, then click Verify. Once verified, submit your sitemap and use the Performance report to see which searches bring visitors.

What is Google Search Console and why does a small business need it?

Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that shows how your website appears in Google Search. It tells you which pages Google has found, which searches show your site, and whether anything is stopping a page from being indexed.

For a small business, that matters because you cannot fix what you cannot see. A plumber, a roofer or a coach can have a perfectly good website and still be invisible for the searches that bring in work. Search Console is the first place I look when a client says "my site is not showing up".

It is a different tool from Google Analytics. Analytics describes what visitors do once they arrive. Search Console describes what happens before they arrive: whether Google can find you, and which searches lead to your pages.

What do you need before you connect Google Search Console to Wix?

Wix's Help Center (read 19 October 2026) lists the requirements. Check these before you start:

  • An upgraded site. Connecting to Google Search Console needs a Premium plan.

  • A connected domain. This can be a domain bought from Wix or one bought from another provider.

  • A published site. Search engines can only index pages you have published.

  • Indexing switched on. In your SEO settings, the "Let search engines index your site" toggle must be enabled.

  • No password on your homepage. If the homepage is members only or password protected, search engine bots cannot crawl it, and verification will fail.

Wix prices vary by country, so check the current plan options for your region in your dashboard rather than relying on a figure from a blog post.

How do you verify your Wix site with Google Search Console?

There are two routes on Wix. The manual route is the one I use because it is predictable and you can see every step.

Manual verification with the HTML tag

  1. Go to Google Search Console and click Start now.

  2. Choose the URL prefix property type and enter your full address, for example https://www.yourbusiness.com.

  3. Click Continue, expand HTML tag and copy the meta tag.

  4. Leave that tab open. In a new tab, open SEO & GEO in your Wix dashboard.

  5. Scroll to Tools and settings and select Site Verification.

  6. Expand Google Search Console, paste the meta tag and click Save.

  7. Go back to Search Console and click Verify.

The detail that trips people up is the address. Wix stresses that you must verify the full site URL, including the https://www part, exactly as your site loads. If your live site uses www and you enter the version without it, verification can fail.

Verification through the Wix SEO Setup Checklist

The other route is the SEO Setup Checklist in your dashboard. Complete step one of the checklist, then click Connect to Google. Wix says this route also submits your sitemap to Google automatically. It has two limits: only site owners and admin collaborators can use it, and you cannot verify through the checklist more than once. If you ever need to verify again, you must do it manually.

If you already verified manually, your site is already connected and you can ignore an incomplete "connect to Google" step in the checklist.

Why does Search Console verification fail on Wix?

Most failures come from a short list of causes. Wix's troubleshooting guidance points to these:

  • The wrong Google account. If you have several Google accounts, sign out of all of them and sign in with the one you want to own the property.

  • An educational email address. A university address ending in .edu may block access to certain services. Change the email on your Wix account and try again.

  • An expired connection. If you change your Google password, the earlier authorisation stops working. If Wix reports that it lost its connection, click Reconnect Now.

  • A blocked page. A password-protected homepage or the indexing toggle being off will both stop verification.

  • Too many properties. A Search Console account can hold up to 1,000 properties. Remove old ones if you are at the limit.

  • Browser clutter. Clear your cache and cookies, and try again with ad blockers paused.

How do you submit your sitemap on Wix?

A sitemap is an XML file listing the URLs on your site. Every Wix site has one, and Wix updates it automatically when you change your pages. You can view it by adding /sitemap.xml to your domain.

If you connected through the SEO Setup Checklist, Wix submits the sitemap for you. If you verified manually, submit it yourself:

  1. Open Search Console and select your site.

  2. Click Sitemaps in the menu.

  3. Under Add a new sitemap, enter sitemap.xml.

  4. Click Submit.

You only need to do this once. Because Wix keeps the sitemap current, there is no need to resubmit it every time you add a page or a blog post.

How do you ask Google to index a new page?

Publishing a page does not mean Google has seen it yet. The waiting time is decided by the search engine, not by Wix, and it is the same for every website.

To nudge Google along for a single page, such as a new service page or blog post:

  1. In Search Console, paste the full page address into the search bar at the top.

  2. Press Enter and wait for the inspection result.

  3. Click Request Indexing.

Wix suggests re-submitting only the page that changed, because that is more accurate than resubmitting everything. Requesting indexing is a request, not a guarantee, so do not request the same page repeatedly.

What should a small business check in Search Console each month?

You do not need to live in the dashboard. A fifteen minute monthly check covers the useful parts.

  1. Performance. This report shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position. Look at the top queries and top pages. If a page has plenty of impressions but few clicks, its title tag and meta description are probably weak.

  2. Page indexing. Check that your key pages, such as services, contact and location pages, are indexed. If an important page is excluded, fix the cause before writing more content.

  3. Sitemaps. Confirm the sitemap shows as successfully read.

  4. Core Web Vitals and mobile usability. These flag speed and layout problems on real visitor devices. I cover them in my guide to Core Web Vitals for small business websites.

Data does not appear instantly after verification, so give it a few days before judging the reports.

How I use Search Console on client projects

On a redesign, I check Search Console before launch to record which pages already earn clicks, then again after launch to confirm those pages are still indexed. That habit is part of how I handled the 18 permanent redirects on the Sports Without Boundaries rebuild for a Winnipeg youth sports charity, and it is the safety net I describe in my guide to redesigning a website without losing Google rankings.

For a one-person business like Manzo Mechanical, a Brooklyn plumbing and heating company, the useful question is simple: does the site appear when someone nearby searches for a plumber? Search Console answers that with real queries rather than guesses.

Frequently asked questions about Google Search Console on Wix

Is Google Search Console free to use with Wix?

Google Search Console itself is free. The requirement on the Wix side is a Premium plan and a connected domain, because Wix does not allow connecting a free, unconnected site. Check your own dashboard for the plan price in your country.

Can I use a Domain property instead of URL prefix on Wix?

Wix's own verification steps use the URL prefix type with the HTML tag, and that is the method I recommend for a straightforward setup. A domain property uses DNS verification instead, which needs access to your domain's DNS records.

How long does it take for Google to index my Wix page?

Wix says the waiting time is decided by the search engines and is the same for every website, not just Wix sites. Requesting indexing for a page can speed up discovery, but it does not guarantee a date.

Do I need to resubmit my sitemap every time I add a page?

No. Wix updates your sitemap automatically when you change your site, so a single submission is enough. Only resubmit if you have fixed a sitemap error.

Why does Search Console say my site cannot be verified?

The usual causes are a mismatch between the address you entered and the live address, signing in with the wrong Google account, a password-protected homepage, or search engine indexing being switched off in your Wix SEO settings.
