Google Business Profile Website Setup: How to Rank Locally in 2026
Last updated: 17 October 2026
Quick answer: To make your Google Business Profile website work together, link the profile to your site's most relevant page, keep your business name, address and phone number identical on both, choose accurate categories, and list every service you offer. Google says local results rely mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, so complete details and a steady flow of genuine reviews matter most.
What is a Google Business Profile website setup?
A Google Business Profile is the free listing that appears in Google Search and Google Maps when someone looks for a local business. Your Google Business Profile website setup is simply how that listing and your own site support each other: the profile sends people to your site, and your site proves to Google that the details on the profile are real.
Many small business owners treat these as two separate jobs. In practice, they are one system. If the profile says you are open until 6pm and the website says 5pm, or the phone number differs, you create doubt for customers and for Google.
I build sites for contractors, plumbers and service businesses, so I see this daily. On the Ridge Roofing landing page, which serves DC, Maryland and Virginia, the site and the profile have to say the same thing about service area, services and contact details, or the quote requests suffer.
How does Google rank local businesses?
Google's own Business Profile help page, as quoted in search results I read on 17 October 2026, says local results are based mainly on three factors:
Relevance: how well your profile matches what someone is searching for. Google's advice is to add complete and detailed business information.
Distance: how far each business is from the location in the search, or from the searcher's estimated location if none is given.
Prominence: how well known a business is, based on information from across the web such as links, articles and directories. Google says review count and review score also factor in.
Google also states that you cannot pay for a better local ranking. That is why the work below is about accuracy and credibility, not tricks.
Which website page should my profile link to?
Link to the page that best answers the search, not automatically the homepage.
Single location, single service area: the homepage is usually fine, provided it shows your address, phone number, services and a clear call to action.
Several locations: link each profile to its own location page, never all of them to one page.
One main service: consider linking to that service page if it converts better than a general homepage.
Whichever page you choose, check that it loads quickly on a phone, because most local searches happen on mobile. If speed is a worry, my guide to Core Web Vitals for small business websites explains what to fix first.
How do I keep my website and profile consistent?
Consistency is the cheapest local SEO win. Compare these items on both:
Business name: use your real trading name, not extra keywords.
Address or service area: if you travel to customers, say so clearly on both.
Phone number: use one primary number everywhere.
Opening hours: update both when hours change, including holidays.
Services: the services listed on the profile should each have a matching section or page on your site.
Then add local business schema markup to the site, so search engines can read those same details in a structured form.
How do I choose the right categories and services?
Your primary category tells Google what you are first and foremost, so pick the most specific option that describes your main work, such as a plumber rather than a general contractor. Add secondary categories only for things you genuinely do.
Then list your services with plain descriptions. A service business that offers six services should list six, each described in a sentence or two. This is the relevance factor in practice: complete, detailed information gives Google more to match against what people type.
For a one-person business like Manzo Mechanical, a plumbing and heating company in Park Slope, Brooklyn, the site was built around one phone call. The profile does the same job from the other side: it should make that call as easy as possible.
Can I manage my Google Business Profile from my Wix site?
Yes, in part. Wix offers a Google Business Profile integration, and Wix's developer documentation describes a connection flow in which the site owner opens a single-use Google authorisation link and approves access. A 2021 news report on the Wix and Google partnership says owners can edit hours, add photos and reply to reviews from within Wix.
Two cautions from the developer documentation, as shown in search results on 17 October 2026:
Wix holds the owner's Google credentials on its servers to maintain the connection.
If the connection needs reconnecting, reconnecting replaces the existing connection and permanently removes the Business Profile locations tied to the old one.
So before you reconnect, note down your locations and settings. Menu names inside Wix change from time to time, so check the current steps in your dashboard rather than relying on a screenshot from a year ago.
How do reviews and photos affect local ranking?
Google names review count and review score as part of prominence. In practical terms:
Ask every happy customer for a review straight after the job, while it is fresh.
Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically.
Never offer payment or fake reviews. It breaks Google's rules and can damage trust.
Add real photos of your work, team and premises. Stock images add nothing.
Put your best reviews on your website too, with the customer's permission, and link to the profile so new visitors can read more.
How do I track whether it is working?
Set a simple monthly routine:
Search for your main service plus your town on a phone and note where you appear.
Check the profile's performance figures for calls, direction requests and website clicks.
Check your site analytics for visits coming from the profile.
Count the new reviews and respond to any you missed.
Rankings move slowly, so judge progress over a few months, not days.
Frequently asked questions about Google Business Profile websites
Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?
You can run a profile without a site, but a website gives you a place to explain services, show proof and take enquiries on your own terms. Google also treats information from across the web as part of prominence, so your own site adds credibility.
Which URL should I put on my Google Business Profile?
Use the page that best matches what people searching for you want. For a single-location business that is usually the homepage, and for several locations it should be each location's own page.
Does my website design affect my local ranking?
Google does not list design as one of its three main local factors. However, a slow or confusing mobile site loses the customers the profile sends you, and clear, accurate service and contact details support relevance.
Can I connect my Wix site to my Google Business Profile?
Yes, Wix offers a Google Business Profile connection. Be careful when reconnecting, because Wix's developer documentation says reconnecting replaces the existing connection and removes the locations on the old one.
How long does it take to rank in the Google Maps results?
Google does not publish a timeline and says it keeps its ranking details confidential. Expect gradual change over months as your information, reviews and web presence build up.
